This role has come about because the firm is looking to strengthen its presence in South Somerset – a beautiful but notoriously tricky location to recruit experienced conveyancers. There's already a solid fee earner on the ground (Associate level), but they’re not looking to step into a business development or leadership role, which leaves a real opening for someone ambitious to help build the department's profile and grow the firm’s local reputation. 

Across the Somerset offices, the team currently consists of around a dozen people, with a good mix of experience and energy, and a genuinely warm, down-to-earth working culture. 

The firm isn’t chasing new build sites or first-time buyers – they focus on a more traditional, private client-focused residential market. That means a lot of consistent work, long-term relationships, and a client base that trusts the firm to deliver. If you’re a qualified solicitor or CILEx lawyer with solid residential experience and a preference for quality over quantity, this will likely be a refreshing environment. 

Progression here is very much on offer for the right person. Those who are keen, consistent, and committed are supported and rewarded. If you’re currently a Senior Associate and looking to grow into a more senior leadership or even partnership role, that path is open. The firm is also open to bringing in someone already operating at Director or Partner level, especially if you're looking to step into a role with more influence and less bureaucracy. 

Hybrid working is in place, with the general expectation being that more senior staff have more flexibility. As a guide, you’d usually spend more time in the office during probation – 3 days a week – with that becoming more relaxed once you’ve settled in. The Sherborne office is the primary focus, but if Bath works better logistically, it’s something the firm can accommodate.

In your first year, the focus is on covering your costs rather than driving hard billing targets. From there, you’ll build toward a realistic 3x target, with a chargeable hours guide of 5.5 per day and an achievable 80% realisation. The hiring process is simple: no more than two interviews, with a preference to make sure senior candidates meet key team members so both sides feel confident.
