Description
Contentious Probate Lawyer | Tier 1 | Bristol (Hybrid) | Clear Progression | Non-Corporate Culture
If you're a newly qualified solicitor or legal executive with an interest in contentious trusts and probate work - or you're already experienced in this niche - this is a standout opportunity to join one of Bristol’s most respected mid-sized firms.
This Legal 500-recognised team sits within the wider Dispute Resolution department at a firm that’s become known not just for high-quality legal work, but also for its inclusive, supportive culture. They have a long-standing reputation in the Bristol legal market, with a turnover circa £15 million and offices across the city - a growing national profile. The firm has around 150 staff in total and continues to invest in specialist teams and internal development through its Training and Associate Academies.
You’ll be joining the dedicated Contentious Probate team, which is a core part of the firm's litigation offering, contributing over £2.5 million in revenue. The current team is 10 strong, with a mix of senior specialists, mid-level lawyers, and junior solicitors, several of whom are members of ACTAPS and STEP. The team is known for its collaborative, knowledge-sharing environment, and works closely with colleagues in other departments. This creates a dynamic, cross-disciplinary feel, where you’re regularly involved in complex matters with moving parts.
The work is a mix of contentious and non-contentious matters, ranging from trust and will disputes, claims under the Inheritance (Provision for Family and Dependants) Act 1975, and burial/ashes disputes, to professional negligence and lifetime transaction challenges. You’ll manage your own caseload with the support of experienced seniors, and take part in strategy, drafting, negotiations, and even hearings.
Ideally you'll be a Solicitor or FCILEx with 0–4 years' PQE and experience in either litigation or private client work, looking to specialise or develop further in contentious trusts and probate. You’ll need to be confident in dealing with sensitive and emotionally charged issues, be highly organised, and enjoy working both independently and as part of a wider team. ACTAPS/STEP membership is not essential - if you're not already working toward it, the team will support your development.
This is a full-time role based at the firm’s modern Bristol City Centre office, but part-time candidates will also be considered. During your probation period, you’ll have the option to work flexibly under their hybrid policy. The firm offers a comprehensive benefits package, a strong focus on wellbeing, and a culture that genuinely prioritises balance, growth, and inclusion.
