There are plenty of very good Employment teams in the North East.

This one can make a legitimate argument for being the best.

I’m working on a Senior Associate opportunity with a major Newcastle law firm whose Employment department sits right at the top of the regional market.

And I don’t mean that because somebody in marketing has written “market-leading” on the website.

The Legal 500 suggests so, as does Chambers. 

More importantly, the work backs it up.

You’ll advise some of the biggest employers in the region alongside national organisations, handling everything from complex discrimination and whistleblowing matters through to TUPE, restructures, collective consultation, senior exits, industrial relations and tribunal litigation.

There is real variety across sectors too, including healthcare, education, manufacturing, leisure, sport and the third sector.

But the biggest selling point for me probably isn’t the directory rankings.

It’s who you’ll learn from.

The Partner you’ll work closely with is exactly what I think a senior lawyer needs at this stage of their career.

Highly regarded technically, very commercial, extremely well connected and, crucially, someone who actually mentors the people around him.

Not “my door is always open” mentoring where the door is technically open but you’re terrified to walk through it.

Proper mentoring.

Someone interested in making you better, giving you exposure, helping you develop your own client relationships and moving you towards the next stage of your career rather than keeping all of the interesting work at Partner level.

For somebody at Senior Associate level who wants to become a genuinely rounded employment lawyer, build their profile in the North East market and put themselves on a credible path towards partnership, there aren't many better environments I could point you towards.

It’s Newcastle based, it’s a serious team, and it’s a role I’d particularly like to discuss with Employment lawyers who are good where they are but perhaps starting to wonder what the next five years actually look like.
