Residential Development Associate – Newcastle

A leading national law firm is looking for a talented Residential Development Associate with 3-6 years PQE to join its highly regarded team in Newcastle. This is a fantastic opportunity to work alongside experienced partners, receiving valuable mentorship while contributing to high-profile residential development projects.

About the Role

The successful candidate will be involved in a wide variety of work across the residential development sector, providing legal services to major housebuilder clients and property developers. Key responsibilities will include:

  • Drafting and negotiating land acquisition deals, strategic option agreements, and promotion agreements, along with ancillary documentation such as transfers, overage deeds, and funding agreements.
  • Advising on brownfield regeneration schemes, including joint ventures with Registered Providers (RPs) and public sector bodies.
  • Supporting clients in large-scale disposals of affordable housing to RPs and bulk sales of units to PRS and BTR providers.
  • Supervising junior solicitors (0-3 PQE) and a Trainee Solicitor, fostering a collaborative environment within a specialist residential development team.
  • Participating in client training and business development events to build and strengthen client relationships.

The Team

The firm’s Residential Development team is one of the leading legal teams in the UK, working with many of the country's top 20 housebuilders, as well as institutional landowners and other key sector participants. The team supports clients through the entire lifecycle of new build housing, from land acquisition and planning to construction and the sale of completed homes. The range of projects is extensive, spanning from smaller developments to large urban regeneration schemes worth billions.

With a team of over 240 lawyers, the firm’s Residential Development team is part of a larger Property Platform, which includes more than 700 professionals working across legal, surveying, engineering, architecture, and accountancy disciplines. This multidisciplinary approach ensures clients receive comprehensive and innovative solutions.

About the Candidate

The ideal candidate will have a strong background in commercial real estate, with a keen interest in residential development. While experience in residential development is preferred, candidates with commercial property experience are also encouraged to apply.

Key qualities we are looking for include:

  • A strong interest in residential development and a desire to grow your expertise in this area.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to build strong client relationships.
  • A proactive and solution-focused approach, with the ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
  • Ambition to develop a client network and contribute to business development efforts.
  • Attention to detail, a strong work ethic, and the ability to manage competing priorities and deadlines effectively.

Why Join?

This is an excellent opportunity to progress your career within a well-respected, forward-thinking firm. The successful candidate will benefit from:

  • Ongoing support and mentorship from experienced partners and colleagues.
  • A competitive remuneration package, including an annual bonus based on individual performance.
  • A comprehensive benefits package, including flexible working options, health care, pension, cycle to work schemes, and more.
  • Access to a variety of professional development opportunities, including training through the firm’s Learn platform.
  • A range of lifestyle benefits through the firm’s Perks at Work/Home platform, covering everything from fitness courses to retail discounts.
