The Team
The internal costs team provides specialised costs support across all departments within the firm. The team comprises Costs Draftsmen and Costs Lawyers who handle legal aid costs, Court of Protection costs, and between-the-parties cost recovery. With ongoing growth and an expanding range of services, we are seeking an experienced Costs Draftsperson or Costs Lawyer to focus on between-the-parties cost recovery and contribute to the development of the department.
The Role
This position is ideal for someone with over 10 years of litigation experience in a legal costs environment, whether from a paying or receiving party perspective.
The role offers variety, opportunities for career progression, and support for professional qualifications for those seeking to become qualified Costs Lawyers. The successful candidate will play a key role in strengthening the in-house costs team and will join at an Associate level.
Key Responsibilities
- Draft accurate Schedules and Bills of Costs in compliance with the Civil Procedure Rules across claimant departments.
- Manage a diverse caseload, from lower-value multi-track to higher-value multi-track costs claims.
- Provide technical advice on costs recovery.
- Prepare replies to points of dispute and handle the detailed assessment process.
- Address fixed costs arguments and provide advice on related issues.
- Prepare budgets and manage costs effectively.
- (Optional) Advocacy work.
- Support litigation teams to ensure compliance, best practices, and optimal outcomes in cost recovery.
- Assist with operational improvements and contribute to best practices within the costs team.
- Provide training and mentorship to junior team members.
- Contribute to internal training initiatives, either as a trainer or in a supporting capacity.
- Assist with gathering and analysing management information.
Required Skills:
- Significant experience in bill drafting and the detailed assessment process.
- Experience in budget preparation and the costs management process.
- Strong written and numerical skills.
- Excellent organisational skills and ability to manage workloads under pressure.
- Clear and reasoned communication skills for providing technical advice.
- Analytical skills to research, interpret information, and develop technical arguments.
- A collaborative attitude, with a willingness to support and mentor junior team members.
- Proficiency in IT, including experience with Costsmaster or similar billing software.
This is a full-time position, though part-time hours may be considered for the right candidate. Flexible working around each individual can be arranged.
